Bopp is a Raspberry Pi based robot and test-bed for various ideas.
Raspberry Pi V3 running Raspbian.
Initially using a Picon Zero motor controller from 4tronix. This worked fine when using a 5V power pack, but recently tried using a 2S 7.4V 2000mAh LiPo battery for the motor supply and 5V DC-DC converter for the Raspberry Pi. This worked for a few seconds but is seems the DRV8833 chip is now fried as it is getting rather hot and the motors are not longer working. Also drawing ~1A constantly.
I will investigate this further to see if this was something I did wrong (some ideas – no heat sinks, ground loop). The 8833 is supposed to have in built current/thermal protection but I have not had much experience with these.
In the mean time I am going to try a 4tronix RoboHAT Robot Controller board. Which are larger, slightly more expensive but include on-board DC-DC controller. I will also add some heat sinks this time.
The motors are held in place using 3D printed motor mounts from Thingiverse.
